Actually what they are doing is pretty normal in the larger view. We as African Americans are so engulfed in white culture and how we have been brainwashed to think, that we forgot about our own culture in Africa. These types of dances and movements are normal in African countries where the people are butt ass naked or damn near naked in tribes. A lot of the dances are rituals and are performed as rite of passage or daily rituals. We are basically carrying on tradition as black people subconsciously. Sexuality is apart of life and should not be shameful, western civilization, white culture and modern civilization which is somewhat removed from its true nature has programmed us to believe that this is bad but its not at all.

We have a tendency to believe that anything that is or deemed inapporpriate or not understood by "society" is wrong or ghetto...and quite simply it is not.
There is an "age of appropriateness" to consider but once you're past that there is nothing wrong with what they are doing BUT it also doesn't need to be on display for the world to see.......for free......forever and ever, amen...and that is exactly what it is now, whether the girls who posted it like it or not.
The girl in white is definitely commited to her "craft" - hopefully she's as commited to her studies and will be able to turn one or both into something that makes her a success.

OMG – relax! While Who Dat’s statements regarding African dance are wildly general, misguided and exaggerated try to look past that and see the context of what’s being said – the fact is that society sees a lot of what we do as inappropriate and/or even savage – TRUE African culture including dance and art is becoming more and more accepted as time goes on but there was a time where anything “African” was looked upon no differently than this stanky leg video, almost everything in our culture (however far removed Afr-Am’s may be from it) was seen as third-worldly. So whether it’s something made up in the mind of a teenager who’s never been out of the US let alone directly exposed to African culture or something that is “truly” based on African culture, we are always expected to conform and act appropriately according to some standard set by society.
While I am pretty sure there are no “stanky leg” rites of passage and rituals going on in Africa, the fact is that our style of dance *not the dances themselves* but the way we move and express ourselves is absolutely derived from our culture. We are strong, outspoken, and expressive in everything we do and it’s never been looked upon kindly. To be “civilized” according to society means repressing instead of expressing oneself and many of us have fallen into the trap of repressing and even being embarrassed by those not afraid to express themselves.
Again there are aspects of appropriateness to consider, age, venue, audience, etc but dance in whatever form it takes is an art, yes even the stanky leg. Dance is expression and it ranges from mildly provocative to wildly provocative, not everyone is going to appreciate every form of dance, most won’t appreciate the stanky leg just like they won’t appreciate a bunch of white boys jumping around and slamming into each other in a mosh pit but it is still their form of expression.
If you believe freedom of expression through dance, whatever form it takes, is savage, beastly and disrespectful to oneself then the problem is with you and not Who Dats misguided statements or the Twerk Team….
