BlogXilla For Sexual Intellectuals: New York Hip Hop Strikes Again

  • VIChick · 1 year ago
Xilla I cannot agree with you more. I was a big fan of hip-hop back in the day. Straight hip-hop head and then things just started going south...literally. Not knocking the progression the south has made to the hip-hop nation but it seems like west coast and east coast has just lost their way. Everyone is just looking out for themselves. Your right when you mentioned the tragedies with Pac and Big. That changed the game dramatically now everyone seems too Gully..Too hardcore. It's very discouraging.

Fighting is wack no matter what but to slant this like it's a NY or East Coast thing is a tad ridiculous. Of course people have their own opinions, but some of it is just ignorance. This is not specifially to you Blogxilla, this is to anyone in general who thinks that all NY or East Coast rappers are bitter about the South because that ain't true. First, unless you've actually scene the NYC hip-hop seen firsthand, then that excludes you from the conversation. This is not a territory thing like a lot of people tend to make it, it's an education thing. Recognize that:

    1. NY and East Coast are not the same. Yes, NYC is on the east coast, but so are Washington DC (Mid-Atlantic), Florida, SC, NC, etc but those are totally different regions and we seem to forget that the South is East Coast as well.

    2. Southern rappers have beef too. Remember the July issue of XXL with Trina, Ross, Khaled etc on the cover? There was a lot of drama in putting that together because there wasn't as much unity in FLA as we originally thought. FLA = the south. I know because I work there, this is not some uneducated guess that I'm making like a lot of people tend to do. Didn't Trae and Mike Jones have beef? How about Shawty Lo and TI? Plies and Trick Daddy? I hate when people act like having no unity is unique to East Coast or more specifically NY. The NY hip-hop scene is different but there is unity up here just like there's beef, it's not one sided.

    2. There are NY rappers who sell out and make "Southern" songs, but at the end of the day, the mainstream perpetrates a stereotypical "Southern" sound when there more musical diversity down there than gets represented.

    3. Everything out of he South is NOT hot. Let's get that straight right now. Sure, it's what's poppin in the mainstream but that don't mean it's good. It means that it SELLS. I think that's also part of the frustration of rappers from other places, not just NYC. Record labels jump on what's hot so if there's a hot stupid dance or trend song coming out of anywhere (not to exclude Harlem), then that's who gets signed and a lot of that lately has been Southern artists. Now, don't read me wrong, this is not hate on the South because I acknowledge real talent out of the South like T.I., OutKast, B.o.B, Curren$y, Jeezy, Ludacris, etc but let's face it, wack juice is everywhere. It ain't just NY or East Coast.

    4. Why do you think everyone is going indie?

    5. Did you know that the new NY movement for rappers is getting bread overseas? I know mad rappers who are talented in NYC but don't get major label burn in the US because they don't sound cliche yet they go overseas and are superstars. That's the new NY movement.

    5. There is so much going on in the world that could be rapped about, like the economy, gas prices, or having a job like Rick Ross, but we would perfer to talk about spending money the regular people don’t have, and of course b*tches and ho*s.

What does that have to do with East Coast rap being bad? The last time I checked, EVERYONE was on some materialistic tip.

I say East Coast rap has become the “John McCain” of music because they just don’t get it. Kanye is coming out with a new style like every other week, and New York rappers are still trying to make down south songs.

Stop checking for the mainstream if you feel this way. There's mad talented cats not just from NY but from quite a few places making a buzz.

    Asher Roth
    Charles Hamilton
    Wale
    Kid Cudi
    Mickey Factz
    Skyzoo
    Torae
    Tanya Morgan
    Fresh Daily
    Homeboy Sandman
    P.Casso
    Nola Darling
    Blu

    etc.

Check where all these people are from and peep how original they are.

Contrary to popular belief there is no formula for making a hit record.

There IS a formular to making a record in the mainstream. SELL! Talk to any rapper out here and if they tell you that ain't true, they're lying.

P.S. I was born and raised in NYC but I love good hip-hop period. Stop making it North vs South and kindly be reminded that there are Southern states on the East Coast. Wack juice is everywhere.
